Celo Considers Transition from Standalone Blockchain to Ethereum Layer-2 Network

Celo, the independent blockchain, contemplates a transition to an Ethereum layer-2 solution. Such a move could mean better liquidity, improved security, and enhanced compatibility.

Celo Eyes Switch to Ethereum Layer-2 Network.

The Celo blockchain development team, led by CLabs, is considering migrating from an independent layer-1 blockchain to an Ethereum layer-2 solution. According to the team, this transition could lead to better liquidity, increased security, and improved compatibility. The proposed move was announced following months of research and initial conversations with members of the Celo and Ethereum communities.

The proposed migration will initially utilize Optimism's OP Stack, which allows developers to establish their layer-2 chains. Celo's move to the OP stack would negate the need for constant monitoring of compatibility and would provide developers easy access to a wide range of Ethereum tools and libraries.

The major change could ease liquidity sharing between Celo and Ethereum, enhance security, and facilitate a seamless developer experience. Given Celo's existing compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Ethereum developers can smoothly port their existing apps or develop new ones using many of the same tools.

Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, commented positively on Celo's transition plan and provided some technical suggestions, expressing his enthusiasm for seeing the Celo ecosystem move closer to Ethereum.
