Ubisoft, the esteemed creator of Assassin's Creed, has announced its next blockchain game, "Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles". Renowned for its early adoption of blockchain technology, Ubisoft continues to trailblaze the gaming landscape despite facing some backlash.
Quietly unveiled recently, Champions Tactics is a unique PC game that offers a player-versus-player (PvP) tactical role-playing game (RPG) experience. While no screenshots have been released yet, the teaser trailer hints at a vibrant fantasy world with figurine-like silhouettes of fantasy characters, suggesting a unique aesthetic akin to physical tabletop games. Players can look forward to assembling a team of mythical champions, engaging in gripping tactical battles, and discovering the legends of the dark, mystical world of Grimoria.
This latest offering will be Ubisoft's inaugural venture built on Oasys, a gaming-centric blockchain network that has caught the eye of other gaming powerhouses such as Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco. In a similar vein, last fall saw game developer DoubleJump.Tokyo announcing its own Oasys game, based on Sega's Japanese Sangokushi Taisen historical card game IP.
Champions Tactics will be available on PC via a dedicated desktop application, hinting at a "free drop at launch" to enable gameplay. This suggests that the game might require an NFT or token to play, with Ubisoft offering them for free—at least in the initial phase.
Ubisoft's previous foray into the blockchain world involved the introduction of limited-edition NFT-based items on the Tezos blockchain for the PC version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint in late 2021. This move stirred considerable excitement in the gaming community. Persistently building partnerships and advancing in the Web3 world, Ubisoft has also recently released its Rabbids characters in The Sandbox, an Ethereum metaverse game.
Ubisoft's exciting journey into blockchain technology started in 2020 with a Rabbids-themed NFT experiment benefiting UNICEF and continued into 2021 with the launch of One Shot League, a spinoff of Ethereum NFT fantasy soccer game Sorare. With Champions Tactics, Ubisoft continues its commitment to the blend of gaming and blockchain technology, shaping the future of the gaming industry.
